Our Values based Education

Glenmere Ethos and Values

We have embedded our school ethos of GREAT with our school values into our curriculum, and we believe we are GREAT at Glenmere because:

We GROW to become caring, confident and responsible members of our multi-cultural society. We strive continuously to improve the outcomes of our children through peer reflection and a rigorous self-evaluation system.
We RESPECT each other and treat everyone the way we want to be treated and understand that we are all different. We encourage partnerships working with our community to support the raising of aspirations.
We understand that children learn better when they are excited, and we provide many opportunities to ENJOY learning in many, different ways. Every lesson brings something new to discover.
We strive to be successful in all that we do so that we can ACHIEVE great things and feel a collective sense of pride.
We are more confident in our learning when we work TOGETHER because we know that the harder we work, the prouder we become. We involve all stakeholders in the decision-making process and provide opportunities for stakeholders to contribute to future developments.

Each letter of our ethos 'GREAT' links to the following values. There are introduced each half term as a focus alongside all of our values.

Values based Education

At Glenmere Primary School, we teach children a range of values which help them to work with one another cooperatively and with respect. They learn the importance of friendship and unity, we teach children to approach life with positivity and hope, and to show empathy and acceptance towards others. These values make our school community happy and harmonious, a fun place, where children feel secure.

The Programme

At Glenmere Primary School every individual is valued for who they are and what they contribute to the school. The Values Education Programme is intended to support the personal, social and spiritual development of every pupil throughout the school. The whole staff team and all pupils are involved in promoting values and recognising where others are ‘living the values’. The values developed through the Values Education Programme have been selected by pupils and staff as values which are important within the school community and which will be important throughout life.

Aims

Through the Values Education Programme we aim to:

Improve behaviour and conduct by developing strong values within the pupils at the school.
Develop pupils' understanding of what values are and why they are important in life.
Encourage children to ‘live the values’ in all aspects of their lives both in school and out.
Promote values to pupils in every aspect of school.
Promote values in the way in which adults interact with each other and with pupils.
Display our school values and encourage all visitors to take account of them in their time in the school.
Encourage parents to support the programme at home by promoting the ‘values of the half term’ to parents in newsletters and parent meetings.

Procedures

The Values Education Programme consists of a set of ten values.
Each half term two new value are introduced through an explicit assembly
Further understanding of the value in the context of the school and the wider community is developed through being promoted by all staff in every aspect of school life
Assembly themes will be linked to values with religious festivals observed and a balance of different religions promoted in teaching our values
PSHE lessons will have opportunities to discuss and promote values within each classroom with informal opportunities being utilised whenever possible, e.g. playtime, lunchtime, trips
Values are displayed outside the school entrance, in our signage throughout the school, on display in the school hall and within each classroom. Ways in which the value might be demonstrated are displayed throughout the school and are discussed with pupils
Values are promoted to parents through our newsletter with each value highlighted and explained
Values are promoted to the community through our website which highlights our values approach
Every week certificates are awarded to children who have demonstrated a value in an exceptional way.
Each class has a values tree display and 5 pots for our values tokens. All the ten values are rewarded with a token and the two focus values of each half-term are counted up at the end of each half-term, with the class collecting the highest amount receiving a special certificate from the head teacher, and they also get to look after the Glenmere values bear for that half-term.
